讲座摘要
Computer vision-based perception systems play a vital role in the development and deployment of autonomous driving and other autonomous systems. Raw images are processed and comprehended by various AI enabled algorithms, and then follow-on decisions/actions are taken in accordance with derived information and situational awareness. To ensure safety and improve efficiency, it is important to understand the error characteristics of a perception system and their consequences at a system/vehicle level. Furthermore, the performance of the perception system is also significantly affected by environmental and other factors. This talk introduces perception error modelling including random error, misdetection, fake objects, etc. Preliminary work on misdetection is presented where the influence of misdetection arising in a perception system on the driving performance and safety is investigated. Control and mitigating strategies are introduced to reduce its influence. This talk argues that, to ensure safety of autonomous systems operating in complicated traffic environments, it is important for the community of both computer vision and vehicle systems to work together. Particularly, a contractual approach of ‘assume-guarantee’ is strongly advocated.
