报告摘要:

The main research focus in the Xia Lab atOakland University for the last twenty-four years is the study of cartilage degradation during the process of osteoarthritis usingmicroscopic magnetic resonance imaging (µMRI). His non-invasive µMRI iscomplemented by other micro-imaging techniques in his lab, including polarizedlight microscopy (PLM), Fourier-transform infrared imaging (FTIRI), and microscopiccomputer tomography (µCT). Together with biochemical assays and biomechanicaltesting, Xia’s group examines the influence of the molecular and microscopic changes on tissue’s functional integrity, providing critical information towardsthe understanding, and ultimately, management of early arthritic diseases. In this talk, Prof Xia will introduce the capabilities of theresearch tools in his lab, and present some applications of µMRI in physics, engineering, and biomedicine.

报告人简介:

Yang Xia completed his MSc (1989) andPhD (1992) dissertation research under the guidance of Sir Paul T Callaghan atthe Physics and Biophysics Department of Massey University (New Zealand). Thetopics of his dissertations were the physics of magnetic resonance imaging(MRI) and the quantitative MRI of polymer dynamics and plant vascular flows atmicroscopic resolutions. Hisfirst experiment on flow and diffusion was published together with the firstintroduction of q-space concept in MRI in 1988 (J Phys E: Sci Instrum 21, 820, 1988). Aftera two-year postdoctoral research at Cornell University (Ithaca, New York), Yangjoined the Physics Faculty at Oakland University in 1994 and now holds the rankof Distinguished Professor (in Medical Physics).

At Oakland University since 1994, Professor Xia’smajor research effort is on the study of articular cartilage usingmultidisciplinary microscopic imaging techniques. His research has been fundedcontinuously since 1999 by four 5-year R01 grants from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). More information on his research andpublication can be found from his website: http://www.oakland.edu/~xia.
