报告摘要:

Billions of years ofevolution have endowed the biological world with exquisite functionalities.Historically, many leaps in human civilization are propelled by drawing cluesfrom nature, from the invention of the aircraft to the Shinkansen train, andfrom the development of nacre-inspired super strong materials to medicalrobotics. Over the past decade, learning from nature has led to new paradigmsin developing robust mechanical systems with a high level of sophistication andfunctionalities.

In this talk, I will first discuss our recentprogress in exploiting bio-inspired structures to fundamentally change thesolid-liquid or solid-solid interactions for a wide range of mechanicalrelevant applications such as thermal management, anti-icing, oil/waterseparation, anti-fouling and switchable adhesion. Finally I will discuss my ownperspectives on how to catalyze new discoveries and to foster technologicaladoption to move this exciting area forward.
