Material thermophysical properties are important for the design and development of advanced energy systems. Nuclear fuels and materials, for instance, undergo significant microstructure and property changes in the harsh reactor environment.  The understanding of property degradation due to neutron irradiation relies on experimental capabilities to determinematerial properties at different length scales. This talk will present experimental techniques based on thermal wave excitation, specifically the laser photothermal reflectance method, to determine thermal diffusivity andthermal conductivity. They can be used to measure properties of thin films orbulk material with surface lateral length of tens of micrometers, which is important for measuring thermal resistance of interfaces and ion irradiatedsamples. The research provides not only thermal property data for the basic understanding of irradiation effect, but also tools for post irradiation examination in hot cells.

报告人简介:

Dr. Ban is currently the R. K. Mellon Professorin Energy at the University of Pittsburgh, Mechanical and Materials Science Engineering Department and area Director of the Center for Energy. Dr. Ban’s research interests covers topicsin thermal and energy sciences. His focus has been to understand the relationship between material microstructural change and its thermal performance, with research covering experimental and computational material thermophysical properties and measurement technique development. His research can be applied to a better understanding of nuclear fuels and materials, micro-scale measurements, and the development of hot-cell or in-pile sensors andinstrumentations. Before coming to the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Ban was a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at Utah State University and the founding Director of the Center for Thermohydraulics and Material Properties. He is also a former associate professor at the University ofAlabama at Birmingham. Dr. Ban received his PhD in mechanical engineering fromthe University of Kentucky; his MS in engineering thermal sciences from the University of Science and Technology in Hefei, Anhui, China; and his BS inengineering mechanics from Tsinghua University in Beijing. Dr. Ban have also been selected as a Fellow of American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and International Thermal Conductivity Conference.
